Multiple award winners from many hosting journals and institutions, Bluefish offers a package that, on the face of it, appears very reasonable indeed. Having been in the industry since 1997 this is one of the longest serving web hosting outfits still in operation, and experience of that ilk is difficult to beat. With a policy of excellence in customer service and commitment to high performance hosting at sensible prices Bluefish will find many takers – and has a loyal and widespread customer base – and the one on one phone support is an impressive promise, if somewhat tempered by other limitations as we shall see.

Value For Money

At $6.96 a month the basic Bluefish package is pitched in the ‘reasonable’ pricing range if not the very cheapest end of the market. Nevertheless this is a good package – unlimited storage and transfer per month are the main points of interest, unlimited domains and FTP accounts, email and so on ad to the interest, and the usual factors that are important to small business users and home users are all here. It is to smaller businesses that the Bluefish package will appeal and given the amount of service in there we see no reason why it shouldn’t. Not the cheapest, then, but fully comprehensive and well priced.

Reliability

Like most in the business there is an implied full uptime guarantee, and the 30 day money back guarantee is there to temper any customers who may find their introductory period not to plan. We found reasonable feedback from the customers in relation to Bluefish, but there were a few less than satisfied ex customers, something that always sets alarm, bells ringing.

Customer Support

Although Bluefish, like many, promises 24 hour customer support – something that we consider essential, even for home users – we were slightly perturbed to find that this is not quite the truth. Yes, there is 24 hour support by email, and the one on one telephone support promised and described is an excellent initiative that we appreciate very much, but closer scrutiny reveals this is only available between certain hours. Out of office hours there is no one to one support available. A good range of tutorials and a decent knowledge base is also available.

Control Panel

Bluefish is among the few hosting services using their own control panel, a system that resembles the ubiquitous cPanel in many ways and is well developed, easy to use and powerful. We like the use of integrated bespoke systems such as this, and when it comes to customer testimony there is much positive about the system, so full marks for trying to be that little bit different without pushing the boundaries too much.

Environment

Bluefish offers no specific or detailed policies on the subject of green issues but with the experience it has in the market we believe it is one of the better placed companies for such moves in the future.
