Godaddy has come a long way since it was founded by Bob Parsons in 1997. The company has since grown into a leader in the industry that manages more than 30 million domains. Due to their controversial marketing tactics, Godaddy is probably the best known web hosting brand today. They are the biggest domain registrar in the world and if you consider all the domains under their management they could well be the largest web hosting company as well.
The Godaddy website is like a virtual shopping mall that contains every possible product or feature you can possibly require. They offer an incredible range of products and their hosting packages are arguably the most flexible in the industry. Each hosting package include their custom Hosting Connection tool that gives you access to more than 50 of the most popular web applications, including the latest Wordpress blogging software, forum software like phpBB, content management systems like Joomla and many others.
The reason why Godaddy is not rated as one of the top 3 hosts today comes down to simplicity and ease of use (or the lack thereof). The amount of options and special offers you are presented with during signup can be very confusing and the control panel is not always intuitive and user friendly, especially to customers who are new to web hosting. The good news is that you can always add or remove components from your hosting package afterwards. The Godaddy products are so well integrated that you can upgrade and downgrade or even convert from Windows to Linux hosting with the click of a button.
Value For Money
For $4.74 per month you can get the Godaddy economy hosting plan, which gives you 10 GB of disk space and 300 GB of bandwidth, together with a long list of features and bonuses. The fact that the disk space and bandwidth are limited may seem like a disadvantage, but this is in fact a positive thing because it means that Godaddy does not over subscribe their servers like many web hosts do.
Reliability
Even though Godaddy is a massive company with many products and millions of customers, they still manage to deliver a web hosting service that is highly reliable. This is largely due to the fact that they own and manage their own data centres, instead of renting like many of their competitors do, but also due to a strong commitment by their CEO and senior management. Godaddy guarantees 99.9% uptime for all their hosting packages.
Customer Support
With a customer base this big you may be worried that you will be just a face in the crowd, but the fact is that Godaddy knows how to support large volumes of customers and they still manage to respond to queries quickly and efficiently. They offer 24×7 support via phone and email and a large help center that contains user guides, frequently asked questions and various other self help tools.
Control Panel
In order to cater for their unique product set, Godaddy uses a proprietary control panel developed specifically for their needs. The control panel has a vast number of features, but it is unfortunately not very user friendly and definitely not suited for beginners. Experienced users may love the flexibility that the Godaddy control panel offers, but most customers may be better off with something more straightforward.
Environment
At present Godaddy does not have any active environmental programs or initiatives that we are aware of.
